Perhaps I needed to adjust the in game gamma/brightness setting a bit higher at times, but that usually made the necessary correction. What really threw me off here was that I've been using those brightness settings for some time and I've never really had a problem in any other game. I can actually see the gamma setting icon now, nights and interiors are looking good! I bumped that up a bit and now everything looks normal. I just adjusted some settings in the GPU control panel and it turns out I had the brightness too low. And for me, the icon to test the gamma setting is not visible at any gamma setting. With a full moon and a clear sky you can barely make out anything around you, and you have to use a torch to go anywhere. Many interiors and night are just wayyy too dark.
